Dearing Junction on Lake Burton

This four bedroom, three and half bath Adirondack style Lake Burton home offers  privacy and easy access to Clayton and to the Waterfall Club. Sitting high over the lake with tree framed views, this warm and inviting home has beautifully fisnished details, vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and hardwood flooring. The gourmet kitchen boasts a Wolf gas range, Dacor oven, ice maker, stone countertops and large walk-in pantry.  The spacious great room was designed with a large stone fireplace as the focal point.  A full length screened porch overlooks the lake and distant mountains. A generous master suite on the main floor offers a relaxing haven with its own sitting room, pine walls and beadboard vaulted ceiling with exposed beams.  The rustic style master bath has double vanity and walk in shower.

The terrace level offers a warm family/rec room  opening to an open aired terrace perfect for lazing away the day reading a good book.  Windows add natural light and high ceilings  give an open and airy feel.  A half bath completes the rec room. A hallway introduces three additonal bedrooms and two full baths. The large laundry room is on the terrace level.

A meandering golf cart path  makes easy access to the boat house. A fire pit  half way down  is wonderful for cooking smores or enjoying a star filled evening.

The  prominently  situated two stall boat house  features right angle slips  for easy docking and a sunning deck in-between highligting the view of Lake Burton down Timpson Cove. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a day swimming or kayaking to Anchorage for ice cream and treats.

From The Owner:

We rented houses all over Lake Burton for many years ,  and took all four of our children and each child brought a friend.  We rented an old beat up boat from Ken Sanders  that the kids thought was wonderful.  We all had a wonderful time each year.   A few years later we acquired a lot and began thinking about building.

We had been to The Adirondacks in New York State and liked the houses, interiors and the furnishings. The lakes, mountains and forest in The Adirondacks are very similar to Lake Burton  so when it came time to design our house we used the Adirondack style for the exterior and interior of our house as well as some furnishings.  Gail is an antique dealer and has furniture in many homes on Lake Burton, Lake Rabun and Highlands.

We wanted a large useable porch that was screened,  had a metal roof, and that overlooked the lake and mountains.  We wanted a lot with minimum  yard to upkeep,  wanted privacy  from the neighbors at the house and the boat dock.  We wanted to save as many of the trees on the lot as possible, and wanted to be on the east side of the Lake for easy access to Clayton.  We also wanted to save the mountain laurel and rhododendron.

Prior to designing the house, we made the following list of items we wanted in the house.  We were able to include these ideas in its construction.
1.  Paved drive with easy access into the house.
2.  A great room containing living, dining and kitchen.
3.  A vaulted ceiling with beams.
4.  Stone fireplace
5.  Lots of windows.
6.  Direct access to a large screened porch with a metal roof.
7.  A real pantry with plenty of storage near the kitchen.
8.  A master suite and sitting room on the main level.
9.  A large play room with a pool table.
10. All bedrooms that are roomy and have a view of the Lake.
11. A bunk room with three bunk  beds for the children.
12. A large laundry room.
13. Large owners closet.
14. A lower porch for swinging, hammock, games and grilling.
15. A basement for the furnace, water heater, water filter, tools, boat storage, etc.

Being on Timpson Cove turned out to be an ideal spot on the Lake.  The wave action caused by heavy boat traffic is much  less than on the large basins of  Lake Burton.  It is safer to swim, get in and out of boats, and  to park boats in the boathouse.   When  boats are tied up to
the dock, they are not knocked around by the excessive wave action.  There are only three days a year that boat traffic is heaver,  Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day,  but at least they have to slow down as they approach the end of the Cove.
Less boat traffic and therefore less wave action, allows our granddaughters to use the kayaks to explore and have some independence on the lake.  Their favorite thing is to paddle to Anchorage to get  ice cream,  or to paddle up Timpson Creek as far as they can go.

Christmas Trees

Our  son –in- law planted several small Christmas trees  a few years ago.  They have grown well over the past few years.  Last Christmas he brought his two girls up to the lot to cut down a tree to take home.  He did not realize that the tree had grown as much as it had.  The size did not phase him or the girls.  A tree was cut down, loaded on his truck, and brought home.   They had to squeeze it down to get  it through their door.  They had to move the furniture around to clear a place for the tree.  The tree was too tall and the top had to be cut off in order to stand it up.   The tree filled about one third of the room.  The children thought that this tree was the best  Christmas  tree ever.

Playing Cards

Our family likes to play a card game called Oh Hell.  We often play it at night  on the porch listening to the sounds of the night.  It is fun because we often have four generations playing and all are competitive.  The great grandmother cuts no one any slack.

We like to come to Lake Burton in the wintertime when it is cold and maybe some snow.  We build a good fire, find a good book to read and have a quiet relaxing week end

I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was young.  My grandmother loved hydrangeas and  likewise, I developed  a love of them.  We have planted  many plants of   several varieties .  Last year we had hundreds of blooms.  One of  my granddaughters  at  age 8 , painted me a wonderful painting of hydrangeas for my birthday.

Grandmothers Bed

When our grandchildren were little (3 to 4 years old), they would get up early and sneak up stairs to our bedroom and climb in bed with us.  Soon each of the others would follow suit, and we would end up with lots of little heads sticking out of the covers between us.  When the children had guests they all would appear and get in bed with us.  We started out with a queen size bed but had to move up to a king sized bed.   We have a Woody Long painting over our bed entitled “ Jumping on Grandmother’s Bed”.  We discourage jumping on the bed!
